Why Do Machines Breakdown?
Nowadays, many businesses
manufacture a number of products using the same machines. The schedule of
production determines which product is to be manufactured for a particular
period of time and the changeover thereafter. Some time is spent only in
changing the settings and adjusting tolerances for the next product to be
manufactured. Sometimes, the setup has to be completely changed for production,
i.e., tools and dies to be replaced for a different product. This is a time
consuming and high skill job that requires a good amount of experience. It can
consume more time than the actual production cycle if the operator does not
have expertise in the changeover process which decreases the productivity and
wastes time
Time is a valuable asset for a manufacturing
business. Wasting time that could otherwise be utilised in production is not
affordable for profitable manufacturing. For diverse production, Setup and
adjustment losses are unavoidable but optimisation by implementation of the
right techniques is possible. Some of the techniques for optimisation are
advanced preparation of equipment for manufacturing of different products,
operator skill training and a well-designed action plan. By following these techniques
of TPM
there is a reduction in losses incurred because of changeover downtime and the
organization becomes more profitable and productive.
